Utopia Early Music breathes
life into the Salt Lake City music scene
with its historically informed performances of medieval, renaissance,
and baroque
music. While
the music itself may be centuries old and
performing it well requires serious scholarship, all music exists in
the here and now. To help this repertoire emerge from its chrysalis, we
bring a playful, open-minded approach to everything we perform.
We
chose the name Utopia to
reflect our ideal of a musical world in which
anything is possible. This ancient concept was named by Thomas More,
who published his book Utopia in
the center of the period spanned by
our repertory. Closer to home, we are based in the heart of the
American West, a region settled through utopian dreams and
sustained by a historical vision.
In addition to our core
membership, we feature guest musicians both from Utah and out of
state, making each performance a truly new collaboration
